Kids look for another win over ESN
With two consecutive lopsided victories, Northampton head football coach Kyle Haas finds himself with an added luxury.
It also will help the Konkrete Kids’ defense further solidify itself down the stretch as they seek an East Penn Conference (EPC) North crown.
“We’re able to get more kids an opportunity to play,” said Haas, whose team (2-1, 2-0 EPC North) blew out Pleasant Valley 63-7 last week. “They are getting into games and doing well. That will help us this year and next year. We’ll have kids with more experience.
“Our defense will have to win games later in the season. It will help be a very good football team late in the season.”
Junior quarterback Joe Kerbacher left the game against Pleasant Valley at halftime when his team held a 42-7 advantage. He completed 7 of 8 attempts for 122 yards with a touchdown, and he also ran for 51 yards with a pair of touchdowns on the ground.
“Joe’s (Kerbacher) only incompletion actually was a drop,” added Haas. “He threw extremely well and was on the money. Joe is always tough to defend because he can get outside and is very fast. He also has weapons all around him.
“Right now, he is playing with a lot of confidence.”
Senior running back Tyrese Brandon also has another solid game as he finished with 101 yards and three touchdowns.
“Tyrese (Brandon) continues to run the ball well for us,” said Haas. “He is really coming into his own.”
The Kids will return home Friday night to meet winless East Stroudsburg North (0-3, 0-2 EPC North). The Timberwolves are coming off a 60-16 thrashing by Allen and have allowed 159 points so far this season. Northampton blanked them 50-0 last season.
Their main threat will be quarterback Anthony Johnson, who threw for 133 yards and rushed for 62 with a touchdown last week.
“Their quarterback (Johnson) can take off and complete passes on the run,” said Haas. “He can ad-lib well. He can always leave you guessing what he is going to do. It can leave our defensive backs having to cover for a long time as his receivers will roll back toward the ball.
“We’ll try to simulate that in practice. Our primary concern will be trying to keep him contained. We played a Pleasant Valley team that basically kept their guys in the box with the triple option. It will be exciting to see how our kids will respond.”
The Kids are in a similar situation to last season when they impressively won five consecutive games before they fell to Stroudsburg in what essentially was the EPC North title game.
Haas believes his team has learned from their previous flight.
“We know it is all about each play,” said Haas. “You are only as good as your next play. It is about the next quarter and the next game. You can’t look back, but you need to look forward.
“Our kids get it after last year. They have bought into the system. We’re a stronger team across the board and that’s a good thing. Our expectations are high and we’ll continue to move forward.”
PREDICTION: The Kids get Nick Caiazzo back in the lineup to further help their cause. Their lone challenge will be to contain East Stroudsburg South’s quarterback, who has been their entire offense. It is a perfect opportunity back home for the defense to tighten and sharpen their game for some possibly big games ahead. For the offense, it will be another short night for the starters and another half for the younger players to get some experience. Don’t worry about early Saturday morning plans... K-KIDS, 59-0.
