Residents earn Girl Scout’s highest award

Three local Bethlehem Area School District Girl Scouts earn highest honors of Gold and Trifecta Awards, as well as receiving the Union League of Philadelphia Good Citizenship Award. The Trifecta Award honors young women who have earned all three of Girl Scouting’s highest awards – the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Fewer than 5 percent of qualified Girl Scouts earn this award. The Union League’s Good Citizenship Award goes to high school juniors who show high personal standards of behavior and leadership.

Elena Hume’s Gold Project - “Eat for You, Eat for the Earth” - focused on teaching young children the importance of sustainable and healthy eating. She designed and built countertop greenhouses for elementary classrooms and taught lessons on plant biology, healthy eating and sustainable eating. Elena will be graduating in the spring of 2020 and plans to pursue a career as an orthopedic trauma surgeon.

Isabella Scipioni’s Gold Project – “Little Language Learners” – addressed the need for more foreign language programming at the elementary school level in her district. Isabella and her team developed curriculum for an introductory Spanish Club program and facilitated lessons at two elementary schools. With Isabella’s help, these schools will continue her Spanish Club. Isabella will be graduating in spring of 2020 and would like to study law or politics.

Lauren Woolley’s Gold Project – “Identity Theft Protection & Awareness Events” - raised awareness about identity theft in her community. She created informational flyers about the dangers of identity theft to educate the public. Lauren and her team worked with the Bethlehem Township Community Center to host free shredding events in her area. Lauren will be graduating from Freedom HS in 2020 and plans to study biology.
