District offers cyber school option
As online education becomes more commonplace across the country, Whitehall-Coplay School District has met the challenges of staying up to date by providing options to students who would benefit from an alternative method of learning.
Eight years ago, the district introduced its own version of cyber schooling - the Whitehall-Coplay Virtual Learning Program.
The program is most beneficial to students who require homebound instruction or those who have been removed from a brick-and-mortar school.
It also offers an alternative to students who are considering disenrollment, making it more likely that they earn their diplomas. Those who need a quieter setting to learn or who thrive as independent learners may also find this type of learning to be more effective.
The Virtual Learning Program instructs students from grades K to 12 using WCSD’s curriculum.
Upon enrolling, students receive a Cyber School in a Box™, which includes a laptop computer, a printer/scanner, necessary hardware and software, and access to technical support.
Curriculum is high quality and rigorous, and students receive one-on-one live support from their teachers.
Every day, students meet virtually with their homeroom teacher for guidance and so attendance can be monitored. Weekly progress reports are shared with the students’ families.
Cyber students have access to an academic coach, who helps them develop time management skills. A writing lab and virtual tutoring are available.
AP and honors classes are offered through the program as well.
Virtual learners also have the option to participate in programs offered through Lehigh Career and Technical Institute.
Students with IEPs - Individualized Education Programs - will receive support by virtual teachers certified in special education.
Cyber students are able to earn a diploma and participate in graduation. In addition, they can meet with guidance counselors as well as utilize the library and athletic facilities.
Students can participate in extracurricular activities, including clubs and athletics. They are also invited to attend special events like the prom.
While the tuition is free to students in the school district, Internet service is the responsibility of the students’ families.
Though academic learning takes place on line, there are times when students will need to be on campus, such as during PSSAs and Keystone exams or for extracurricular activities.
Transportation is not provided by the district.
