BETHLEHEM BAPL commissions ‘H.D.’ portrait

Moravian College professor Angela Fraleigh has been awarded a Bethlehem Area Public Library portrait commission of poet and writer Hilda Doolittle. “H.D.”, as she was known, wrote “The Gift”, a memoir about her childhood years in Bethlehem. The artist earned bachelor’s and master’s fine arts degrees in painting from Boston and Yale Universities, respectively. She is currently the chair of the college’s art department.

The commission is in conjunction with “Finding H.D.” about the life and work of the author. In October, Mock Turtle Marionette Theater will premier a new play about her during Touchstone Theatre’s Festival Unbound. The event is a partnership between the Lehigh University English Department, Mock Turtle Marionette Theater, the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center and the library.

The portrait will be hung permanently by the end of the year in the Main Library, 10 W. Church St.
