SP tops Carbon for ninth win
The South Parkland offense has done pretty well for itself this season, putting up 55 runs in eight games coming into Tuesday’s game against the Carbon Monarchs (4-4).
The Trojans added six more runs against Carbon, but all six were set up by errors and were unearned runs. The result was a ninth straight conquest for the Trojans in a 6-4 win over Carbon.
South Parkland still got to Monarchs starter Justin Marykwas for nine hits in the game and struck out just twice. When his fielding did hold up, Marykwas was able to pitch out of some trouble, but was wearing down late in the game as his pitch count reached 105 on the day.
Joe Webber was a one-man machine in the first inning when he led off the game with a double and one out later swiped third base. On the throw to third, the ball got away from third baseman Drew Frank. Webber picked himself up and raced home with the game’s first run.
Adam Mellinger started the game for South Parkland and threw a scoreless first, but gave way to Koby Staivecki to start the second. In the first meeting between the two teams, Staivecki threw an eight-inning shutout in Parkland’s 1-0 win over the Monarchs.
Staivecki, who served as Parkland High School’s closer this season has been a starter for South Parkland and has made the adjustment well.
“Personally, I’d rather be a closer, but there’s nothing wrong with starting,” said Staivecki. “I probably feel a little stronger than a lot of guys because I didn’t throw too many innings during the high school season.”
After he had shutout the Monarchs for eight innings, they were finally able to do at least a little damage against him in the second when they tied the game on an RBI single from Frank.
South Parkland put together a two-out rally to score two runs in the fourth. Parker Schwartz singled and went to third when Matt Gibbons reached on an error. Webber then singled to bring home Schwartz before Gabe Stay singled to plate Gibbons and make it a 4-1 game.
The Monarchs put together enough offense to score three runs off Staivecki in the top of the fifth and tie the game. While South Parkland threatened in the fifth by putting runners on first and second, Marykwas got Schwartz to ground out to second to end the inning. In the sixth, the Trojans got a leadoff single from Matt Gibbons and one out later, an error by Frank put runners on second and third. A walk loaded the bases and Alex Oliver singled to drive in Gibbons. A groundball by Trent Viola brought home another run to make it 6-4.
Adam Smith had come on to pitch in the sixth inning and Carbon loaded the bases with one out, but Smith struck out Brad Buzzard and got Jake Taras to line out to end the inning. If the Trojans thought Carbon would go quietly in the seventh, they were wrong. Ian Hubbard and Mason Barndt led off with singles before Smith got Jared Joyce to swing through a third strike. Anthony Palumbo came on to pitch and struck out Marykwas before getting Zimmerman to ground out to end the game.
“We’ve got the pitching and we have offense,” said South Parkland coach Tom Kahn. “We have that goal of a state championship. We made a good run a couple years ago, but didn’t get there and we’re determined to make it happen. We know that it will get tougher and tougher, but we’ve got the guys to do it and take us all the way. We’ve set that goal and we’re not shying away from it at all.”
Their rivals from North Parkland (8-3) would like to be the ones to hang the first loss of the season on the Trojans and they get that chance when the two teams meet at Parkland High School Thursday at 7 p.m. If they make it 10 straight wins Thursday, there will be just four teams – Salisbury (5-4-1), Allentown (2-7), Emmaus (3-7) and Lower Macungie (4-6) – that still have a chance to keep the Trojans from completing an undefeated regular season.
