Buffs fall to Lower Mac, beat Emmaus

The North Parkland Buffaloes (8-3) aren’t used to seeing what they saw on Monday when Lower Macungie scored three first-inning runs and didn’t look back in a 14-0 win. The good news is that the Buffaloes were able to get right back on the field Tuesday and things returned to normal with an 11-2 win over Emmaus.

Against Lower Macungie (4-6), an error led to three unearned runs in the first inning.

The Mustangs put up another run in the third and three more in the fourth made it 7-0. In the sixth, a two-run double by Brian Horoshko made it 9-0 and an RBI single pushed it to 10-0.

Unfortunately for the Buffs, Lower Macungie wasn’t finished. Everett Horton stepped to the plate and launched a long line drive to center that Colten Peischl attempted to make a diving catch on, but the ball appeared to go just inches past the tip of his glove and roll to the warning track.

Right fielder Andrew Sorrentino rushed over to get the throw in, but Horton was able to circle the bases for a three-run inside the park home run. Braden Waller and Horoshko held the Buffaloes to just one hit in the game.

“We didn’t hit today and we ran into a good pitcher,” said coach Terry Stoudt. “They had a good day at the plate and put up a lot of runs against us, but it was just one of those days. We’ll come back tomorrow and play better.”

Stoudt’s words were prophetic as the Buffaloes got off to a quick start against Emmaus (3-7) with a six-run bottom of the first. Emmaus pitcher Steven Doddy was wild and after giving up a leadoff walk to Phil Schoch, hit the next three batters with pitches, making it 1-0. A quick hook brought Jimmy Braxmeier into the game and Collin Duff greeted him with a two-run single and a ground ball by Sean Brosious made it 4-0. Andrew Sorrentino singled to reload the bases and Chris Lessel drove a single to right to score two more runs in the inning.

With a comfortable lead, Sorrentino breezed through five innings on the mound, striking out 10 and allowing two runs, one of which was unearned. Sergio Rodriguez came on and finished the final two innings, adding two more strikeouts to the mix.

North Parkland used eight hits and scored two unearned runs on three Emmaus errors. Ryan Correll had an RBI single and Schoch had a two-run single in the third to make it 9-0. Emmaus put up two runs in the top of the fifth and the Buffaloes added two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-2.

Sorrentino had two hits in the game, while Duff and Schoch each drove in two runs and scored a run for North Parkland.

The Buffaloes play rival South Parkland (9-0) Thursday at Parkland High School. In the first meeting of the two teams, North Parkland lost to the Trojans 9-1 back on June 15th. After that, just four games remain on the schedule, with two against Coplay (3-5-1) and home games against Carbon (4-4) and Northern Valley (3-5).
