Deegan named Fulbright finalist
Brigid Deegan ’19, of Bethlehem, was named a J. William Fulbright program finalist during a Muhlenberg College annual Honors Convocation recently. It is awarded through national competition for graduate study or teaching abroad.
Lopez in Peru
Jennifer Lopez, of Bethlehem, was one of nine Lebanon Valley College students who completed a week of service in Peru in May. She is pursuing a bachelor of science in communication sciences and disorders and Spanish at the college.
The students lived in Misminay, a remote village in the Andes Mountains, for most of the trip. They taught English to children and built and planted a greenhouse to establish a sustainable community food source.
Northampton County honors locals
Northampton County recognized a number of municipal employees and residents for the positive impact they have on the county during an awards ceremony at the county’s inaugural festival May 25 at Louise Moore Park.
The citizens are Eugene and Joyce Ashner, David Bosich, Donald Broad, Chris Dech, Harold B. Garland Jr., Joseph Moser and Joseph M. Pokojni Sr.; and Robert Novatnack, emergency management director in the city of Bethlehem, outstanding municipal employee.
Moravian College scholarships
Moravian College announced the first two recipients of the Community Scholarships established for students graduating from Northampton and Lehigh Carbon community colleges. Julio Hernandez graduated from NCC with a 3.97 GPA, has plans to become a speech language pathologist.
Matthew Eible graduated from LCCC with a 4.0 GPA, and plans to major in Biochemistry at Moravian in the fall.
Moravian Academy student is delegate
Emily Alchaer, a sophomore at Moravian Academy, will be a delegate to the high school honors only students’ Congress of Future Medical Leaders at Lowell, Massachusetts, from June 23 to 25. The program is specifically for students who wish to become physicians or go into medical research fields.
Carpino heads LV Research Consortium
The Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges has announced that Dr. Christine Carpino is the new director for the Lehigh Valley Research Consortium. The group promotes faculty and student research partnerships with government, nonprofit and for-profit entities to support the quality of life in the Lehigh Valley.
Dr. Christine Carpino is an assistant professor of history, literature and languages at Cedar Crest College. She earned a Ph.D. from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was the group research coordinator and, for the past five years, was the primary investigator on several projects for the research consortium.
PBS39 to honor 3 ‘Good Neighbors’
PBS39 will honor an impressive group of local heroes Nov. 1 at its annual Good Neighbor Awards, given each year in the spirit of its beloved Fred Rogers of Public Broadcasting’s program, “Mister Rogers Neighborhood.”
The 2019 Good Neighbor Awardees are (Founders Award) David M. Jaindl, owner of Jaindl Farms, Jaindl Turkey Sales, Jaindl Land Co., Jaindl Realty, Jaindl Beverage, Schantz Orchards, and Hitters Edge; (Arts & Education) Beverly Donchez Bradley, president of the Lehigh Valley Cops ‘n’ Kids Childrens’ Literacy Program; and (Youth & Family) Alan L. Jennings, executive director of the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley.
The spirit of Fred Rogers’ legacy of education, community, and compassion continues today and his belief that we should “always look for the helpers’ inspires this award recognizing those ‘Good Neighbors’ who assist with the PBS39 mission to promote civic engagement and to fulfill the regional needs of the Greater Lehigh Valley through dynamic communication platforms and resources.
The Good Neighbor Awards will begin at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 1 in the University Center at DeSales University in Center Valley.
Previous Good Neighbor Award recipients include Father Daniel G. Gambet, OSFS, Dr. Joseph J. Roy, Marci Ronald-Lesko, Kassie Hilgert, Dr. Karen Walton, the Hon. Maxwell Davison, Barry Dobil, Nancy Dischinat, Jessica Lee, and Joseph Martocci, PPL Corporation, and Air Products and Chemicals Inc.
