The Emmaus track and field teams sent three individuals and three relays teams to the PIAA Class 3A Track and Field Championships, which were held Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.

Several seniors capped stellar high school careers at the meet, while a few juniors and sophomores got their first taste of state championship competition and will look to have another next spring.

Leading the way for Emmaus was senior Keyon Carroll-Herring, who placed 14th in high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches.

Carroll-Herring, a senior who took up high jumping during his 11th-grade season, came into the state meet seeded 21st based on his 6-1 jump from districts. He got an inch higher and finished better than his seeding at states. His career-best jump of 6-5 came this year at a late-season meet against Bethlehem Catholic.

Emmaus senior Lindsay Lumsden and Mason Boyd also finished in the top 20 at states.

Lumsden took 19th place at states with a triple jump of 36 feet, 6 ½ inches. She was seeded 15th after hitting a career-best 37-2 for second place at districts.

“Keeping above 36 was my goal for the season so I think I reached it,” she said after the event Friday.

Lumsden, a former soccer player who joined track last season as a junior, has been getting better over her two years with the team and will continue her career at Kutztown University.

Her best jump last season was 35-11, but she improved throughout her senior season to culminate her career with a trip to Ship.

“I honestly didn’t think I would (reach states) to start the season,” Lumsden said. “So I’m just happy that I got the chance to be here. I’m psyched to be here whether I placed or not.”

Boyd placed 19th in the 400-meter run. The junior ran his race in 50.95. He entered the meet seeded 23rd at 51.65 after taking second place at districts last week.

The Hornet boys 4x800 relay team also broke the top 20, finishing 19th in 8:16.8 with the foursome of senior Jake Brown, junior Paul Petre and sophomores Mark Magee and Keshav Shankar.

Emmaus’ boys 4x100 relay team finished 22nd overall with a time of 43.65. That team included seniors Allen Doelue, Lubens Myers and Izaiah McPherson and sophomore Colin Byrne.

The Hornet girls 4x100 team too 20th place at the meet with a time of 49.71. That team include juniors Kayla Smith, Alanna Smith, Mackie Dries and Halle Jannett.
