Trojan track teams take second in EPC
The Parkland girls and boys track and field teams used depth and timely performance from front-line athletes to produce strong finishes at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Track and Field Championships held May 7 and 8 at Whitehall High School.
Both Trojans teams took second place in the event. The girls earned 83.5 points during the two-day meet, finishing behind champion Easton with 92 points. The boys also took second, with 71.3 points, well behind champion Liberty with 134 points.
Several Parkland athletes turned in outstanding performances, chief among them senior Madison Zaun.
Zaun earned gold in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:12.20. She wasn’t finished by a longshot, earning a fourth-place finish in the 1600 in 5:18.22. Teammate Ava Bendetti earned three points for the cause by taking sixth in the 800 at 2:24.54, while teammate, freshman Emily Beers, finished 10th. Meanwhile, the 4x400 relay squad took fifth place with a time of 4:16.03, good for four points for Troy.
The Trojans also received a good showing from their 4x400 squad, which claimed fifth place by crossing the finish line at 4:16.03.
Parkland also had a great day in various field events, led by Jada Mangahas, who earned 10 points with a first-place superlative showing in the pole vault. Mangahas broke a school record late in the regular season and continued her strong season with the league gold, clearing 11 feet to finish six inches ahead of Northampton’s Mikayla Davidson (10-6).
Parkland’s Coral Shivok, a freshman finished fifth in pole vault and claimed fifth in the javelin with a mark of 103-feet, 7-inches.
The high jump event was also good for the Trojans. Celine Boychuck took the bronze with a 5-foot, 1-inch jump.
Next to Zaun, perhaps the best individual performance was courtesy of Shelby Staib. She placed in three separate events, taking second place in the triple jump (36-feet, 10.25-inches), the javelin (119-feet) and the discus (105-feet, 6-inches). Teammate Kendra Yeboah made her presence known by taking fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 35-feet, 10-inches.
Other notable performances included junior Ashlyn Fritzinger, who took sixth place in the javelin with a 99-feet, 7-inch mark, and freshman Grace Nation, who finished seventh in the triple jump
The boys were led by Mustapha Salau, who took first place in the 400-meter run, registering a time of 49.22. His teammate, Riley Williamson, took gold in the 1600 with a time of 4:24.84.
The Parkland 4x100 relay squad took second place with a mark of 43.63. Other notable performances occurred in the 200-meter dash, where Sebastian Suriel took sixth and claimed three points. He later earned seventh in the 100-meter dash with a mark of 11.40.
Nicholas Bower also had a good meet, taking fourth in the 3200 with a time of 9:50.14.
Parkland’s boys also did a good job in several field events. In the triple jump, John Panny took bronze and earned six points. Teammate Nicholas Dawkins, a junior, placed third in the shot put with a throw of 46-feet, 2.75-inches. In the pole vault, senior Mitchell Marciniak claimed fifth for his efforts.
In the high jump, Trey Rolle III did good work earning second place with a jump of 6-feet, 1-inch. Also, junior Dante Medlar finished seventh in the javelin throw.
