PHS reaches EPC softball semifinal

Renee Snyder has found ways to come up with big hits at just the right moment this season and she did so again in the quarterfinals of the East Penn Conference softball playoffs.

Snyder’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning against Whitehall gave the Lady Trojans a 2-1 win and advanced them to the semifinals to face Freedom.

The game was a much different one than what the two teams played just three days earlier when Parkland closed out the regular season with a 13-0 win over the Zephyrs. For that game, coach Barry Search changed up the lineup, moving Caroline Rivera into Snyder’s leadoff spot and dropping Snyder to third in the order, which dropped Kelly Dulaney down to sixth.

While the lineup didn’t produce the runs in the second game that it did in the first, all of the players were in the right spot to produce the winning run.

Olivia Ondrejca, who was adjusting to hitting in the ninth spot in the lineup, came through with a one-out single and went to third on Rivera’s double to deep left field. Nicole Klass walked to load the bases for Snyder, who singled to right for the game-winner.

In her usual calm fashion, senior Kelly Dulaney, the league’s MVP, threw seven innings for Parkland, allowing just four hits and not walking a batter. Whitehall bunched two of its hits and a sacrifice bunt in the first inning to produce its only run of the game against Dulaney, who struck out 12 batters.

Parkland came right back with a first-inning run against Whitehall starter Madison Cunningham, who was touched for 10 hits, but just two runs in the game. Rivera and Klass both singled to start the game and after a fielder’s choice erased Rivera, Kylie Hlay singled to center to load the bases. Megan Fenstermaker grounded back to Cunningham and Klass was forced out at home for the second out. Parkland took advantage of an error on Whitehall catcher Madison Lasko to pick up a run in the inning, while leaving two runners in scoring position.

After Parkland’s first-inning run, the game turned into a pitcher’s duel with Dulaney retiring 12 straight until allowing a one-out double to in the top of the fifth. Parkland had some opportunities against Cunningham, including having runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, but wasn’t able to push across any runs until the shuffled lineup came through with the seventh-inning run.

While Dulaney was named the MVP of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, Hlay was named a first-team all-star by the league’s coaches. Rivera was selected as a second-team all-star. Dulaney is a remarkable 17-2 this season with a 0.77 ERA in 19 starts for the Lady Trojans. Hlay leads the team with 18 RBI and is tied for the team lead in home runs. On the season, the senior first baseman is batting .368 for Parkland. Among players who have played in at least 10 games, Rivera leads the team in hitting with a .512 average and is tied with Hlay for the team lead in home runs with two.
