Trojans end Kids’ win streak

The Northampton softball team came to Parkland Saturday with a 13-game winning streak, its longest since 1990.

The Konkrete Kids were also looking for some revenge after Parkland no-hit them to open the season back in late March. The Trojans were ready for them, but it took until there was one out in the bottom of the seventh inning for Parkland to win the game.

Parkland (13-3 overall, 12-1 EPC) went into the bottom of the seventh with the game tied 4-4. Jeremy Piatkiewicz singled to lead off the inning and a well-placed bunt by Blake Barthol moved him over to second.

Northampton had an open base, but decided against intentionally walking Matt Ervolina and he took advantage of the situation and delivered a single to left and Piatkiewicz ran through the third base coach’s stop sign and headed for the plate to score the winning run.

“I knew I hit it pretty hard, so I didn’t know if Jeremy would be able to score on it,” said Ervolina of his game-winning hit. “That’s what makes us a good team. We just never stop fighting.”

The winning run scored on a disputed play in the bottom of the seventh inning when Piatkiewicz and catcher Cullen Cooper collided at the plate.

Piatkiewicz had not tagged the plate and pitcher Cameron Cooper retrieved the ball and dove to tag Piatkiewicz, who was able to reach forward and tag the plate before being called out. The controversy surrounded whether Piatkiewicz slid or ran into the catcher on the play.

Northampton (14-3, 10-3) got two first inning runs and the Trojans came back with a two-run bottom of the second. Joe Webber and Austin Imler drew walks to open the inning. George Jenkins bunted them both up a base and Jack Giovenco grounded a ball through the left side to bring Webber and Imler home to tie the game.

Another leadoff walk to Piatkiewicz started the third and Blake Barthol looked to bunt him over, but wound up with an infield single on the play.

Parkland pulled off a double steal and a groundball by Ervolina scored Piatkiewicz from third. Barthol followed him home on a wild pitch to put the Trojans up 4-2.

Northampton tied the game in the fourth inning, but the seventh-inning run gave Parkland the win over the Konkrete Kids.

“This is a huge win for us, because they’re rolling and playing well and we’re rolling and we’re both good clubs and it’s a dog fight,” said Ervolina “We just kept going back-and-forth, so finding a way to win is huge.”

Parkland head coach Kurt Weber also noted that the win was a big one for his team as it faces all division rivals down the stretch run to the playoffs.

The fact that Northampton had won 13 straight games made being the one to knock them off key for the Trojans.

“Going through the division the second time, we really want to win all of these games and win the division and this was a big game in that regard,” said Weber. “I always say that we want to get better every day, because when you start looking ahead and looking for the big games, that’s when you get into trouble.”

The game-by-game approach has worked well for Parkland, but the Trojans ran into Central Catholic (6-9, 5-7) on Monday and Vikings pitcher Zach Curto was able to contain their bats, holding Parkland to just one run on four hits as the Vikings won 2-1.

Piatkiewicz and Ervolina picked up first inning singles and Webber walked to load the bases in the top of the first. Imler lifted a fly ball to center that gave the Trojans an early 1-0 lead, but weren’t able to push any runs across the plate after that inning.

Parkland has two regular season games remaining, with one Friday at Whitehall (7-8, 6-6) and the finale coming on Saturday night against Emmaus (10-6, 9-4).

The Trojans have wrapped up a spot in the District 11 playoffs and can wrap up the Skyline Division title with one more regular season win.
