PHS volleyball beats PME, Northampton
After a six-game win streak in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play dating about a month, the Parkland boys volleyball team suffered its first league loss since the first of April to rival Emmaus. But the Trojans used a four-set defeat at Easton in the week prior as motivation and got back onto another win streak by sweeping Pocono Mountain East 3-0 by scores of 25-13, 25-16, 25-9 last Monday night at Parkland High School.
Parkland was riding a four-match win streak overall and six in the conference before it dropped its set on the road to a tough Red Rovers team, but it showed resilience in bouncing back on its home court.
“We needed a win to get back on track,” said sophomore outside hitter Jordan Lewis. “We were on a roll and then lost at Easton, so we really wanted to get back to the way that we play.”
Lewis hammered home 12 kills and added three blocks for the Trojans (10-2 overall), while Lucas Adam added six kills and seven aces. Logan and Ben Iacobelli combined for 17 digs.
After a comfortable first set where Parkland led by as many as 18 points and used its height and hitting power at the net, PM East (3-10) made some changes, adjusted to the play and made the second set closer.
The Cardinals pulled to within 19-15, but the Trojans then made a run and pushed their advantage to 23-15 before finishing off the second set for a 2-0 lead.
“I thought that winning the second set was key for us,” Lewis said. “It was close from start to finish so we knew we had to work hard to finish it off. We didn’t want it to be tied because thean anything can happen.”
After winning a closer second set, the third set was never close.
Parkland seemed to want to take care of its business quicker and more comfortably, leading by as many as 16 points in a final set that was never in question.
“It was senior night so we wanted to take care of business for our seniors,” said Lewis. “Hopefully this can get us back on a winning streak.”
Parkland continued its momentum, taking down Northampton the following night on the road in five sets 13-25, 25-23, 25-18, 12-25 and 16-14.
The Trojans will host Freedom on Friday before wrapping up regular season play with three games next week.
