Boys track tops Liberty, Nazareth

The Parkland boys track team has shown at least one thing during the 2019 campaign - they Trojans may get knocked down, but they won’t get knocked out.

After a defeat at the hands of Liberty on April 8, the Trojans rebounded with wins over Nazareth (100-50) and Whitehall (119-31) and a second-place finish in the Allentown School District Invitational on April 18 at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

“They just continue to get better,” said Parkland head coach Scott Levan.

Among those improving is Mustapha Salau, who won the 400-meter run at the ASD Invitational. The Trojans also won the 3200-meter relay at the event.

A week earlier against Nazareth, the 4x800 relay team of Nathan Reimer, Benjamin Esquieres, Ethan Warrren and Riley Williamson earned five point in winning the race in 9:38.9. Reimer also claimed individual glory against Nazareth, winning the 800 just barely ahead of Williamson.

The 4x100 relay foursome of Sebastian Suriel, Ese Duke, Tyler Vicari and Salau proved too much for the Blue Eagles to handle, as Parkland sprinted to a win in 44.5. The same four young men took first through fourth in the 100-meter dash with Salau claiming first and Duke, Suriel and Vicari finishing second, third and fourth, respectively. In the 400, the incredible Salau again took the prize, but Parkland’s supporting cast featured Noah Colon in second, Humza Imam third and Asher Reede fourth.

The Parkland hurdles contingent has also done a fine job this year. Andrew Maitski took the gold in the 300-meter hurdles against Nazareth,

Against Whitehall, the Trojan’s depth made a difference in a blowout win. Gordo Rolle, Jr. won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, claiming a total of 10 points by himself. In the 110 race, teammate Rhian Romain took second, while Maitski claimed second in the 300m tilt, with two other Parkland runners - Aidan Gery and Justin Trexler - won third and fourth, respectively.

In the high jump, Parkland received two good efforts from Trey Rolle III and Adam Klinger, who won first and second, respectively. Klinger wasn’t through, as he won the triple jump, with teammates John Panny, Dylan Rhoads and Liam Wilson taking second through fourth in order. Junior Nicholas Dawkins flexed his muscles in winning the shot put.

Parkland’s future includes a trip to Easton on April 25 and a home date four days later with a solid Emmaus club. The EPC playoffs begin May 7, with District XI battles starting May 14.

“We are looking forward to the next two meets against Easton and Emmaus,” said Levan. “We are also looking forward to going into the league, district and state competitions.”
