Lady Trojans roll to back-to-back wins

The Lady Trojan softball team just keeps rolling along, picking up its eighth straight win with a 10-0 mercy-rule win over the Lady Cavaliers of East Stroudsburg South. The win gave Parkland back-to-back shutouts, coming on the heels of a 15-0 win over Pocono Mountain West late last week.

Against East Stroudsburg South, the Parkland bats went to work early on a cold, blustery day much better suited for football than softball. And they didn’t let up.

Megan Fenstermaker delivered a two-run triple in the first inning and then scored on a passed ball to open up a 3-0 lead. If the Cavaliers thought the first inning didn’t go well, the second was much worse. Parkland opened with three straight doubles from Caroline Rivera, Renee Snyder and Nicole Klass to make it 5-0.

After a walk to Kelly Dulaney, Kylie Hlay and Fenstermaker each drove in a run with a base-hit and Bella Polash delivered a two-run double. One out later, Riley Mang collected a pinch-hit RBI with an infield single and the Trojans were up 10-0.

Dulaney pitched just two innings and Barry Search emptied the bench with new players at every position for the top of the third. Ali Superka picked up two singles and Katie Zaun led off the third with a single. On the mound, Zaun replaced Delaney and pitched well in the final three innings. The sophomore was impressive, allowing just one hit and walking two. All nine outs that Zaun recorded came on strikeouts.

“She’s great,” said Search of Zaun. “It’s nice to have somebody in the wings. That’s where Kelly was two years ago as a sophomore, that’s the role she played with Aubree [Fritzinger].”

Parkland is now 11-1 overall this season and 8-1 in the East Penn Conference, with just a loss to Northampton standing between them and a perfect season. They have already wrapped up a spot in districts and are tied for the Skyline Division lead with Northampton. The two teams meet again on April 27.

Search is never the type of guy to overestimate how good his team is and even with its success this season, he’s still playing it close to the vest when asked about just how good his team is and how far it can go.

“We’ve won a lot of one-run games this year; it could be completely different,” said Search. “I think they are doing a good job and playing some good ball, but it’s touch and go some nights.”

The Lady Trojans have four one-run wins, including a pair of 1-0 wins. They also have won one game by three runs and another by four, with the other five wins being by at least eight runs each, including outscoring their opponents 57-2 in those wins.

Among the regulars, Fenstermaker leads the team in hitting with a .440 average, followed by Snyder’s .414 and Rivera’s .389 mark on the season. Polash leads the team with nine RBI, with Hlay posting seven. Snyder leads the team with 10 runs scored and Fenstermaker and Klass have each scored eight on the season.

The game against the Lady Cavaliers gave Search the opportunity to get some time on the field for his bench and they played well, although Zaun didn’t give them a chance to show off any defensive skills thanks to her strikeout ability. The roster features all juniors and seniors with the exception of Zaun. In assessing the talent level that exists for the future, Search was his usual humble self.

“We’re okay,” said Search. “We’ve got kids coming up.”
