HELLERTOWN-Council approves road, traffic projects
Council unanimously approved the 2019 Hellertown Road Project, which consists of repaving a number of streets in the borough that need attention. With warmer weather coming the project will begin soon, but no specific date mentioned.
The project will cover Constitution Avenue from Walnut to Magnolia streets, Magnolia to Durham Streets, and Whitaker Street from West High to Bachman streets.
According to Public Works Director Barry Yonney, constitution will be the primary goal because of the amount of bus traffic and due to the street being broken down over time. The approximate cost of the project is $150,000.
According to Council President Thomas Rieger, the money is budgeted from two different areas, including liquid fuel funds and general fund money and is set aside on an annual basis.
Rieger explained in the past Hellertown would partner with Lower Saucon for road paving projects that would involve the public works crews for at least six weeks in Hellertown and then the crew would go to Lower Saucon for another six weeks to assist there. It resulted in lost manpower almost the entire summer. Hellertown now hires a paving company which has the necessary manpower, equipment and can get the job done within two weeks.
Council also unanimously approved resolutions for applications to add pedestrian countdown indicators at Main and Walnut streets, Main and Penn Streets, and Main and Water streets, Main and High streets.
A couple announcements were made during the meeting.
