Boys T&F team wins first three meets
Three meets into the Parkland boys track season, the Trojans are showing the rest of the East Penn Conference just how good they can be.
Receiving solid performances from a wealth of returning and new talent, the Trojans defeated Central Catholic 132-18, Freedom 111-39 and Bethlehem Catholic 98-52.
“We’re off to a pretty good start, and are receiving some good showings,” said coach Scott Levan.
Quick off the starting line through the first three meets has been sprinter Mustapha Salau, who according to his coach has been “running excellently.” The results show that statement to be accurate, as Salau swept the 100- and 400-meter dashes in each of the three meets. Salau has led with the way, but he hasn’t done it alone. Teammates Ese Duke, Sebastian Suriel, Joshua Drummond, Tyler Vicari and Rhian Romain also sped to solid showings during the first three meets.
An array of Trojan runners have dominated the 1600-meter run, led by Riley Williamson, who won two of Parkland’s three meets, with the third going to Nathan Reimer.
Parkland has long had solid long-distance runners and 2019 is not exception. Matthew Santacoloma, Nicholas Bower, Ethan Warren and Ryan Smith have also impressed.
Parkland’s relay teams have also done the job. In the 4x100 relay, Suriel, Duke, Vicari and Salau have reigned supreme over the competition early this season.
The same can be said about the 4x800m foursome of Benjamin Esquieres, Reimer, Bower and Richardson, who have done the job. Levan has also “experimented” with other runners in this heat, adding Samuel Franke and Warren into the mix against Bethlehem Catholic.
Levan also praised shot putter Nicholas Dawkins, who has been outstanding in the early season. Teammates Adam Piston, Adam Goldman, Angel Ramos and Simeon Romaine have also muscled up well during the first three contests. Javelin thrower Joseph Walbert took first place in the Central Catholic meet and second against Freedom. Dante Medlar, Karl Schmidt, Andrew Steigerwalt. Logan Merkle and Christian Antry have all been in the mix during the first three contests.
The Trojans’ top long jumper has easily been John Panny, who won all three of the meets to start the campaign. As strong as Panny has been, he has been pushed by talented teammates Adam Klinger, Elgadro Rolle, Liam Wilson and Trey Rolle III, who have also jumped well.
“We have a lot of depth, and that’s going to help us down the road,” Levan said.
