Freedom girls top BC

Freedom’s girls’ track and field team opened its season with a 77-73 victory over Bethlehem Catholic last Monday at Freedom.

Becahi’s Mikayla Jones and Isabelle Rosario won the sprinting events, but the Patriots scored points on second and third place finishes.

“When I talked to my coach (Fred Rice), he said just run it all out, so I was feeling pretty good,” said Jones, whose time was 13.8 in the 100 and 28.9 in the 200. “With the crowd, I could tell someone was coming behind me. It motivates me to go faster.”

The Patriots were top finishers in distance events won by Elizabeth Fihlman who ran the 800 in 2:41.0, and Lauren Charboneau who ran the 1600 in 5:55.0 and the 3200 in 12:50.0.

Both hurdles events were won by Shannon Connelly- the 100 with a time of 19.8 and the 300 with a time of 52.7.

“It was literally a lean, and it was crazy,” Connelly said. “I felt really good, and I know the Beca girl who was right next to me, she beat me last year, so when I saw her out of the corner of my eye I knew I needed to stay with her.”

Becahi did not have a 4x1 relay team, so Freedom was awarded the only points in the event for Sydney Brown, Connelly, Alysha Gargone, and Kiahnilee Ramos whose time was 56.3.

Madison Fey, Fihlman, Charboneau, and Mary Sweeney won the 4x8 relay with a time of 11:17.0, and in a come-from-behind race, Fey, Fihlman, Connelly, and Sophie Twiggar placed first with a time of 4:33.0.

Becahi won all jumping events, beginning with Emilia Lieb in the high jump with a height of 4-05.00, Emma Pfeiffer in the pole vault with a height of 9-06.00, Liz Lieb in the long jump, 15-08.25, and the triple jump, 33-04.75.

Kilia Ramos took first place in the shot put with a distance of 30-08.00, and Isabel Rodriguez was first in the discus with a distance of 91-11, both for Freedom.

Becahi’s Maddie Comp won the javelin with a distance of 82-04.
