Boggs walks off Kids vs. Kutztown

Senior Hannah Boggs had never had a walk off hit before.

She got her first in style with a two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th inning to lift Northampton to a 6-5 win over Kutztown on Saturday.

“I put everything into that swing,” she said. “I felt a little bit of pressure, but I knew I had to get it done.”

When asked if she knew it was gone the moment she hit it, Boggs responded without hesitation, “Yeah.”

Catcher Madison Fraley set the table for Boggs with a one-out single in front of her cleanup hitter.

The game got off to a wild start as Northampton answered Kutztown’s three-run top of the first with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Neither team generated another scoring chance until the top of the fourth when the Cougars drew two, two-out walks after a pair of singles to force in the tying run.

Northampton was able to get runners into scoring position in both the 4th and 5th innings, but the runners were stranded at second when the innings ended.

Kutztown took the lead on a solo homer with one out in the top of the 7th to set up the drama in the bottom half of the inning.

Alanna Hartzell picked up the win in relief, pitching the final three innings.

Kendyll Strohl was 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot. Madison Biechy, Katelyn Stuhldreher, and Ren Herschman had RBIs.

Although Saturday’s game was the most dramatic so far in the young season, the most important has been a 2-0 win over four-time defending EPC champion Parkland. That win, combined with their blowouts over some lesser teams, shows that Northampton is well positioned to claim their first District XI title in softball since 2013.

Head coach Kristy Henritzy likes the way the team is coming together. “We’ve been hitting really well and getting it done where we need to. Our lineup is pretty stacked and I feel confident in their hitting,” she said. “We have great pitching, we have great defense. We have a great team right now. Our league is hard. We can’t get ahead of ourselves in any capacity because we’re playing great teams too.”

Next up for the Kids is a Friday afternoon game against a struggling but dangerous Nazareth team. That is followed by four games against EPC Mountain division foes. An 11 a.m. Saturday home game, against Pocono Mountain East, is a great opportunity to come out and see the team in action.
