Becahi boys top FHS
Bethlehem Catholic’s boys’ track and field team opened its season with a 81-64 victory over Freedom last Monday at Freedom.
The Hawks gained most of their points from jumping events, the 300 hurdles, and the 4x4 relay.
Matt Stianche, Caden Giordano, Isaiah Lopez, and Josiah Kelly won the 4x4 in 3:45.0.
Kelly came in first in the 300 hurdles in 44.3, followed by Tristan Buscemi, and Steven Santostefano,
Becahi also won all points in the high jump, won by Stianche with a height of 5-11.0, followed by Santostefano, and Michael Donchez.
Henry Pavis was first in the pole vault with a height of 11-06.00.
Giordano came in first in the long jump with a distance of 20-09.50, followed by Mychael Althouse and Nathan Palanica, and Palanica was first in the triple jump with a distance of 37-10.50, followed by Donchez and Buscemi.
In throwing events, Freedom’s Kaden Moore won the shot put with a distance of 42-04.25, and the discus with a distance of 107-02. Vince Reph, also for the Patriots, won the javelin with a distance of 140-07.
Nick Bauer, Alex Heidemann, Josh Noel, and Matt Parkin combined to win the 4x8 relay for Freedom with a time of 9:09.0.
Bauer also won the 3200 in 11:34, and Heidemann won the 1600 in 5:22.0, followed by Bauer and Dylan Stahl.
Becahi’s Matt Millen took first place in the 800 in 2:17.0.
“I ran the 4x8 before, and I went out too fast, so this time I went out at a mid pace so at the second lap, I could pick it up,” said Millen. “I was actually supposed to run the mile, but I didn’t hear it, so my coach [Nicole Chickey] told me to run the 800. And it’s always nice to have my dad on the sideline, telling me to push myself to run harder and faster.”
Stianche won the 400 with a time of 54.3.
Reph took first place in the 100 in 11.5, and Sebastian Gibbs was first in the 200 in 24.8 despite a fall and subsequent collision with Kelly at the finish line.
“My legs just gave out right at the end there,” said Gibbs. “I felt confident and relaxed and just went out and did my thing. [Sprinting coach] Tony Flatts is a great coach. He pretty much tries to master the basics, which is really good.”
In the 110 hurdles, Freedom’s Thawadah Rock took first in 16.0.
Becahi did not have a 4x1 relay team, but Freedom’s 4x1 was disqualified, so no points were awarded in this event.
