Evert earns a silver

Liberty swimmer Jake Evert is a PIAA State Class 3A silver medalist since competing in the 50 freestyle this past Friday at Bucknell University. “I’m pretty content with it. Obviously, I was trying to win and wanted to do well going into it,” Evert said.

Evert’s time was 20.23. State College’s Matt Brownstead won the 50 free with a time of 19:55, a new state record.

“It was nice because I saw some splits from other guys I was going to race,” said Evert. “I felt faster and more energized. How you prepare for it- you’ll do well.”

Evert had been working with coaches Reik Foust, Evan Kocon, and Jeff Matyus on sprints and extra yardage.

Evert then won a seventh-place medal in the 100 freestyle on Saturday.

“I was more about the 100 because that’s my event, but I wasn’t in good enough condition,” Evert said. “You taper so much for districts, and then you ramp back up, then bring yourself back down.”

Evert’s time was 45.69.

Teammates Addison Collins, Patrick Gilhool, Jonathan Drago, and Evert placed 24th in the 200 free relay in 1:28.48, and Abby Mack, Greta Stuckey, Natalie Richardson, and Samantha Taylor placed 26th in the 200 free relay in 1:40.08.

“It was really good to have everyone there and enjoying the season, wrapping it up and supporting that,” said Evert. “I was happy to be done and finished decently.”

Freedom’s Al Bell placed ninth in the 100 butterfly in 49.87.
