FHS tennis gets a win
Freedom’s boys’ tennis team opened the season with a 6-0 victory over East Stroudsburg North on Monday at Freedom.
“It’s definitely nice to be at home, but it’s a little different because we’ve had pretty bad weather and it’s only our second time out here,” said Patriot captain Justin Szaro.
Snow fell just in time for the start of spring sports practices, forcing teams inside or not at all. Freedom was able to get in a couple of practices at Northwood Racquet Club.
“It felt a little shaky at the beginning, and it felt new again because I was indoors all winter. Once I got halfway into the first set, I felt calm, I felt collected, and I just drove with it,” said Szaro, who won his match at one singles, 6-3, 6-2.
“He had a great serve and a really good forehand. He was overall a great player,” said Szaro about his East Stroudsburg North opponent. “My serve in the beginning and my forehand were working pretty well.”
At number two singles, Paras Chand won his match, 6-1, 6-0, and at three singles, Advay Deshmukh also won, 6-3, 7-5.
Zach Chomitsky and Fahim Piaker’s match at two doubles was the only one to go to three sets, and it favored the Patriots, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Shivam Chand and Brian Gerra won at three doubles, 6-1, 6-1, and at four doubles, Dylan Sarkozy and Thomas Potts were winners with scores of 6-0, 6-3.
“We’re hoping to make districts this year,” Szaro said. “I think we have a really good team this year, and we have a lot of talent. We just have to bring out their potential. As the season goes on, I definitely think we’ll be stronger.”
