Liberty relay team sets school mark

Liberty’s girls’ swim team won two individual medals, three relay medals, and placed third in team results at the District XI Class 3A Swimming Championships last Friday and Saturday at Parkland High School.

Samantha Taylor, Natalie Richardson, Talia Lehr, and Abby Mack won the silver medal in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.49, setting a school record.

“I was nervous but I was also really excited because our medley is a really tight-knit group of girls and we were really having fun with it before we got in,” said Taylor, who led off. “I was really happy ... I was under my goal time for the medley.”

Greta Stuckey, Richardson, Mack, and Taylor also won silver for the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.79.

“Emmaus was a couple yards ahead, maybe a body length or two. The girl from Parkland and I dove in at the same time,” said Taylor, who was the anchor this time. “We practiced our sprinting and our racing a lot in practice so I felt ready to take that on at the end, so using our turns and our finishes, it was really exciting. I could see we were right with Parkland and it was going to be a good race.”

Liberty senior Kay Wetmore won a bronze medal in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.51, and Taylor won bronze in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.63.

“I felt really fast, especially my second 50. It took me a 50 to kind of get into it and after that I felt really good, especially on my last turn,” Taylor said. “It’s been a goal for me to individually medal since freshman year so this is a really exciting accomplishment for me my junior year.”

Taylor, Stuckey, Richardson, and Mack closed out the district meet with bronze medals in the 400 free relay. Their time was 3:39.06.
