The Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic, which provides funding for the Bethlehem Catholic, Freedom, and Liberty basketball programs as well as their respective feeder programs, took place this past Saturday, in part.
Due to weather concerns and regarding girls’ basketball, Becahi and Freedom played their games while Liberty did not.
Freedom hosted Emmaus and defeated the Hornets, 58-18.
Jennifer Kokolus was awarded MVP of the game for the Patriots. Kokolus scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds.
Becahi hosted Southern Lehigh and fell to the Spartans, 52-42.
Jaleesa Lanier was awarded MVP of the game for the Hawks. Lanier scored nine points.
After an 11-11 tie ended the first quarter, Southern Lehigh pulled away to take a 27-18 lead into halftime. The Spartans had also begun to out rebound the Hawks.
A three pointer by Becahi freshman Kourtney Wilson seemed to spark the Hawks, but a foul on Spartan senior Olivia Snyder and a subsequent turnover resulted in four more points for Southern Lehigh.
The Hawks came out strong offensively in the third quarter, highlighted by Isabelle Rosario’s three and another by Lanier which brought Becahi to within three points to end the period.
In the end, it was Snyder and another Spartan senior, Ellie Cassel, who were too hot for the Hawks to handle with their height, speed, and positioning.
Southern Lehigh scored on nine free throws to clinch the victory.
