Kuykens and Adams take first in diving

Although Liberty’s divers did not compete in the recent EPC Diving Championships due to logistical issues, Hurricane senior Cara Kuykens still has her eye on the upcoming district meet.

This past week, Kuykens placed first in the diving event during the Hurricanes’ swim meet against East Stroudsburg South.

“I think I did well on my back one-and-a-half with a twist. I’ve been doing it all season,” Kuykens said. “There were a lot of dives I haven’t thrown all season, so I thought, why not, and I had to put them in a meet somewhere.”

The inward one-and-a-half was one of those dives.

“It was OK,” said Kuykens. “My last one, reverse dive straight, did not go too well.”

Since East Stroudsburg South had no divers, it was still a good opportunity for Kuykens to be in front of judges and spectators.

Patrick Adams placed first for the boys.

“Definitely his approach, his hurdling, and getting up in the air [have improved],” said Liberty diving coach Emily Kocis. “His inward dive and inward somersault ... he gets up in the air and back toward the board.”

Other divers for the Hurricanes are Morgan Edwards, Maya Stoeckley, Teegan Kunkle, and CJ Van-Spanje.

Kunkle placed second for the girls, and Van-Spanje placed second for the boys.
