A party fit for 3 kings

It’s a tradition that includes singing, dancing, feasting and receiving a visit and present from three men who have traveled a very long way for a very important reason.

Three Kings Day is especially popular in Latino culture, and was celebrated Jan. 6 at ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks.

The Epiphany commemorates the Biblical story of the birth of Jesus Christ. In the New Testament gospel of Matthew, three Maji - or Wise Men - Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar, followed a star across the desert for 12 days to Bethlehem to find the baby Jesus and bring him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The event featured fun for everyone, including activities for children featuring a scavenger hunt and crown and paper star crafts. Several musical selections were performed by Herencia Jibara, and patrons enjoyed Latino food prepared by Holy Infancy Catholic Church.

Also during the event, Alfa Lopez and Victor Martinez, personalities from La Mega radio station, read the story of the Three Kings. The afternoon also featured two special visits. The first was from Einstein the Snow Camel who, seemed oblivious to all the attention he was receiving for adoring children and their parents. The second visit was from the Three Kings, who presented gifts to children. The Wise Men were portrayed by Ramon Rodriguez (Gaspar), William Cintron (Balthazar) and Nelson Matos (Melchior).
