Dr. Michael Birkner, Professor of History at Gettysburg College, speaks about James Buchanan and the Civil War, 1 p.m. Nov. 23, Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, 432 W. Walnut St., Allentown.

Buchanan, of Franklin County, was the only United States president from Pennsylvania (1857 - 1861).

Birkner is the author or editor of 14 books and many articles on 19th and 20th century U.S. political history, including three edited volumes about Buchanan and three others on President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Copies of two books on Buchanan edited by Birkner will be available for purchase. The author will sign copies following the presentation.

The talk is in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibit on the American Presidency.
