LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

’Canes aim for next step

Liberty’s wrestling program might be one of the top oiled machines in the area, but can the Hurricanes take the next step toward solidifying a spot in Hershey this season?

Jody Karam enters his 26th year at the program with one of his most experienced teams, as Liberty hopes they can make their first crack into the PIAA dual meet tournament this winter.

After finishing last season 22-2, with both of their losses coming to league and state powers, Bethlehem Catholic and Nazareth, the Hurricanes will be primed for another tremendous winter under Karam.

Back for the Hurricanes include Sr. Tal Reese-Flemming (113, district, regional and state 3rd); Sr. Matt Maloney (120, district runner-up, regional champion, state 5th); Sr. Mike Torres (132); Sr. Travis Brown (138, district and regional 5th); Jr. Jason Rezac (145); Sr. Josh Talijan (170, district 5th, regional 6th; Jr. Kevin Hennessy (182); Sr. Damen Moyer (195, district and regional champion); Sr. Jake Ahmad (220, district 4th) and Sr. Jaden Freeman (HWT).

Newcomers this year are So. Connor Werner; Jr. Alex Cruz; Fr. Javian DeLeon and Jr. Ansar Niazi.

Liberty started off the season by winning the Boyertown Duals over the weekend with Travis Brown taking home the Outstanding Wrestler award. The Hurricanes finished 5-0 in the tournament, winning the title by a 60-8 margin over Owen J. Roberts in the championship.

The Hurricanes head to the Penn Manor tournament this weekend, but before that, open up EPC action on Wednesday at home against Whitehall.
