Wright looks to return to Hershey
Coach Thad Smith’s second tenure as Emmaus’ varsity wrestling coach begins with him leading a talented squad of grapplers, most of whom are somewhat new to the varsity ranks.
Last year the Green Hornets were 10-9 overall and 4-5 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. Smith welcomes back some talent from last year’s team, including junior Caden Wright (170), who Smith describes as a “year-round wrestler.”
Wright is almost a finished project who believes he can still improve. Wright has long learned the basics and has moved on to improving his conditioning and developing higher level moves.
“This young man is just dedicated to the sport,” Smith said. “He’s going to be more and more successful.”
Wright, a state qualifier last year, also has a maturity that transcends his age.
“He can be a leader when necessary and also be quiet when needed. He’s also constantly learning,” said Smith.
Another star wrestler and state qualifier is Peyton Brown, who Smith said is returning from an injury. How much Brown can and will contribute to this year’s squad has yet to be determined.
Smith has several other solid wrestlers on the Green Hornet roster. Seniors Bryce Ebinger (20-11 last year at 182), Jackson Karrat (17-12 at 138), Chris Tigar, (8-10 at 160) and Luigi Mannino (13-14 at 220) provide experience. Sophomore Kordell Waiters (20-9 at 126/132) is also expected to make an impact.
A pair of freshman have impressed the coach. One is Tyson Karrat (106), who “has big shoes to fill” in picking up for Brown, said Smith. Nick Velde (120) is a “vocal kid” who is “not afraid to speak what’s on his mind.” Another freshman, Quinn Scott (126), could also contribute to the Green Hornets this year. And Jared Kroller (152) is showing promise in early-season practices.
Utilizing the talent of these younger mat men will be key to the season, Smith said. He plans to “bring them along,” but recognizes the best way to do something is to “just get to it.”
The Green Hornets first match is Dec. 12 at Stroudsburg.
