Pates end year in loss to Wilson-West Lawn

Freedom’s boys’ soccer team signed off Saturday night after losing, 1-0, in the PIAA State Class 4A quarterfinal to Wilson-West Lawn.

The quarterfinal, which was played at Upper Perkiomen High School in Pennsburg, started an hour late on an unseasonably cold afternoon, mostly due to wind.

About halfway through the first half, Wilson-West Lawn forward Sage Klein scored on a corner by David Dries.

Ten minutes later, a Wilson forward was one-on-one with Patriot goalie Derek Bast, but Bast made the save.

Freedom forward Bradley Turocy also had a shot in the last eight minutes of the first half but missed.

Sebastian Garces, who had the game-winner for the Patriots in their first state playoff game four days earlier, also just missed scoring halfway through the second half, followed by Mike Gschrey’s attempt off a corner kick with 10:45 remaining in the game.

As time began to wind down quickly, the Patriots’ urgency increased so much that even Bast ran downfield for the final minute, knowing a goal was essential.

When the final whistle blew, most Pates fell to the ground while others walked off the field in stunned silence.

It was the end to a 20-2-4 season for the Patriots, coached by Matt Reightler, Daniel Periera, Dominic DeCesaris, and Jeremy Ethimiades, that included 79 goals scored, nine goals scored against, 19 clean sheets, an EPC championship, and a District XI championship.

Members of the Freedom Patriot championship soccer team are Bradley Turocy, Sebastian Garces, Tye Roemersma, Ryan Raffino, Bryan Mora, Tyler Snow, Peter McGibbon, Jared Whitehorn, Ben Reich, Daniel Ramirez, Michael Gschrey, Zack Fereno, Yianni Hahalis, Austin Hoffert, Nick Stannard, Peter Tichy, Wes Young, Liam Pheiffer, Zach Shay, Zach Chomitsky, Zach Raffino, and Derek Bast.
