Pates Charboneau finishes fifth
Freedom sophomore Lauren Charboneau had a fifth place finish at the District XI Class 3A Cross Country Championships last Wednesday at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course, not the placement she had hoped for, but a top five finish nonetheless.
“I wasn’t feeling my best, and the weather definitely impacted how I ran,” Charboneau said. “The paces were so different from they were last week.”
Last week was the EPC meet, where Charboneau placed first on the same course.
“I had a lead until the hills. Then Ciara [Conboy] popped up,” said Charboneau.
Conboy from Stroudsburg finished in second place (19:20.43), one second behind the winner, Easton’s Meghan Vizian (19:19.05).
Parkland’s Maddie Zaun was third (19:26.60), and Amber Kelly from Stroudsburg was fourth (19:38.91).
Charboneau’s time was 19:40.06.
“I wanted to P.R. again, so I’m a little disappointed,” she said. “I’m just going to get healthy again and try my hardest for states.”
Joining Charboneau at the state meet will be Liberty’s Emily Jobes, also a sophomore, who placed 10th.
“I wanted to medal, so I’m happy with that. I felt like I could have finished stronger but the wind was intense,” Jobes said. “I tried the same strategy as last week, working from behind and chasing people down, especially in the last mile.”
Jobes’s time was 20:18.29.
“The golf course is where I moved up the most,” she said.
Also competing in the Class 3A girls’ race from Liberty were Grace Haas, 16th in 20:37.80, Greta Stuckey, 20th in 20:48.90, Belle Weikert, 25th in 21:00.13, Kaitlyn Murphy, 41st in 21:38.82, Cami Bortz, 60th in 22:29.45, and Evelyn Sharkan, 63rd in 22:39.93.
Also competing from Freedom were Mary Sweeney, 34th in 21:20.24, Cailin Connelly, 42nd in 21:43.44, Camrey Yeager, 46th in 21:52.72, Shannon Connelly, 49th in 21:59.96, Eliza Fihlman, 55th in 22:10.65, and Sophie Twiggar, 59th in 22:29.45.
In girls’ team results, Easton placed first, Liberty placed fifth, and Freedom placed seventh.
