Banuelos, Millen pace Becahi Hawks

Bethlehem Catholic’s cross country team competed in the District XI Class 2A Cross Country Championships last Wednesday at Bethlehem Golf Course where Becahi sophomore Marcela Banuelos placed 16th out of 85 runners in the girls’ race.

“I think I did pretty OK,” Banuelos said. “I think I got a P.R., but I was tired at the end.”

Banuelos’s time was 20:35.39.

“Usually at the start, we run as a team but this time it started so fast, some girls didn’t even know it was starting,” Banuelos said. “I passed people slowly, one by one, because I didn’t want to be out front and tired.”

Since the Hawks had done a lot of training on hills, that part of the race went by quickly for Banuelos.

“At the second hill, I could see my coach up on top, yelling my name,” said Banuelos. “I had enough energy at the end.”

Also competing for the Hawks were Kahli Abrams, 36th in 22:36.51, Julia Bricco, 37th in 22:41.86, Solei Rodriguez, 52nd in 23:22.05, Kayla Zigmont, 59th in 24:17.07, Martina Shelor, 65th in 24:42.37, and Shilynn Cordero, 71st in 25:33.57.

Blue Mountain’s Olivia Haas won the 2A girls’ race with a time of 18:25.19.

In the boys’ race, sophomore Matt Millen took 24th place out of 109 runners with a time of 18:31.25.

Teammates Owen Fitzgerald finished 27th in 18:39.44, Aaron Smith placed 62nd in 19:23.91, and Daniel Smith was 73rd in 19:47.02.

Notre Dame Green Pond’s John Koons won the 2A boys’ race in 16:39.43.
