Ranieri-Cordes is band archivist
Muhlenberg College student Helen Ranieri-Cordes ‘21, of Hellertown, helped recently with digitizing the Allentown Band archives.
The double major in business and media and communication catalogued 2,400 items over eight weeks, working through framed photos and binders full of old programs. She worked with special collections and archives librarian Susan Falciani Maldonado.
The Allentown Band, the oldest volunteer community concert band in the United States, played when the college’s first president was inaugurated in 1867. The band has performed at the last 47 Muhlenberg College commencements.
Hoff interns at B. Braun
Bethlehem resident Emily Hoff, Susquehanna University Class of 2015, was a summer intern at B. Braun, Center Valley.
BASD’s Silva honored
The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading has recognized Bethlehem Area School District Assistant Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer Jack Silva, Ed.D., for his exemplary service to the greater Lehigh Valley as a new member of its Council of Champions.
In addition to his BASD work, he is active with the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley and the Lehigh Valley Reads regional campaign for grade-level reading.
Penn State, BASD THON news
Two Freedom HS 2015 graduates and Penn State seniors are working with PSU’s 2019 THON.
Kelly McCready was named the executive director, and Ryan Lawrence was named OPPerations captain for the dance marathon, for Penn State’s THON 2019.
FHS 2013 graduate Eileen Seitz, a Lincoln ES teacher, is a founding member of the BASD MiniTHON.
BAPL director new TV host
Bethlehem Area Public Library Executive Director Josh Berk has been named as the host of PBS39’s 45th season of the Scholastic Scrimmage academic quiz show. He earned a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Drew University.
The English and education professor and author will moderate two teams of four high school students answering questions on subjects such as humanities, science, the arts and mathematics before a live audience. At the end of the season, the top two teams win cash prizes for their schools, provided by Air Products.
Residents freshmen at James Madison
Two Bethlehem area residents are among the incoming freshman class of 2022 at James Madison University. They are Shannon Callaghan, a media arts and design major; and Daniel Leary, a kinesiology major.
