The Parkland volleyball team might just be peaking at the perfect time.
If Tuesday’s dominating 25-10, 25-10, 25-14 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference quarterfinal round victory over Pleasant Valley is any indication, the arrow is definitely pointing up for the Trojans.
“Our consistency at the net was really good tonight,” said Parkland coach Mike Krause. “We struggled with some inconsistency early in the season, but we’ve been a lot better lately.
“I’m really happy with how we played.”
The leaders at the net for the Trojans were outside hitter Grace Steurer and middle blocker Adriana Goetz-Morales. The pair seemed to alternate kills against the Bears, racking up 12 and 11 finishes respectively, despite not playing in the third game.
Steurer and Goetz-Morales were the main beneficiaries of some outstanding sets from Brooke Kratzer.
“Brooke has worked hard to get to where she is right now,” said Krause. “(Assistant coach) Taylor (Krause) has been working with her and it has really helped. Her hands are so much better now than they were early in the season.”
Kratzer had 31 assists in the match.
“We knew what we were up against,” said Pleasant Valley coach John Gesiskie. “We needed some things to go our way if we were going to be able to hang in with them. We needed them to be a little off their game. But that didn’t happen. They played really well tonight.”
It wasn’t just Parkland’s power game that impressed both coaches.
Pleasant Valley had just two service points in the first two games as the Trojans dazzled defensively to consistently earn side outs.
“They are so strong up front that you can sometimes overlook how great they are defensively, “ said Gesiskie. “We had some hits that I thought were down and the next thing you know the ball is up and they’re attacking again.”
Krause agreed. His team seems to be playing well in all facets of the game as it embarks on what could be another postseason run.
“Tonight, we were on our game,” he said. “In addition to the strong net play, I thought our floor game was really good. We got to a lot of balls.
“Our defensive numbers this year are among the best in the program’s history. Our girls take a lot of pride in their defense. In the postseason, defense is going to be critical for us.”
