George J. Smits
George J. Smits, 87, formerly of Macungie, died Oct. 14, 2018, in Cedarbrook Nursing Home, South Whitehall Township. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (Neuls) Smits. Born in Patterson, N.J., he was a son of the late Garrett and Anna (Fredericks) Smits.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and played with the Second Infantry Division Band.
He served as a Salvation Army officer for 10 years. He then was a Scout executive for the Boy Scouts of America for over 27 years, retiring from the Baden Powell Council in Dryden, N.Y. in 1993. While a Scout executive, he was also a Mason, with Masonic Union Lodge #40 for almost 25 years. After retirement, he volunteered with Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest for 20 years.
He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, Emmaus, where he served as an Elder and sang in the choir.
He is survived by children Charles and his spouse Tim Cooney, of Lansdale, George E. and his wife June, of Tonopah, Ariz., Laura and her husband Doland Miller, of Newport News, Va., Paul and his wife Amber, of Wescosville, Joseph and his wife Elaine, of Emmaus, Raymond and his wife Wendy, of Berkshire, N.Y., Ruth and her husband Jason Keagle, of Newfield, N.Y., Dorothy and her husband Scott Reifinger, of Center Valley; grandchildren: George H., Dawn, Amanda, DeeJ, Phil, Jeremy, Diana, Jessica, Christy, Katie, Nikki, Dalton, Kimi, Zachary, Zoey; more than 20 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his twin brother, William and brother John.

Services will be held 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in Faith Presbyterian Church, Second and Cherokee streets., Emmaus, 18049. Call 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in the church. Arrangements were made by the Stephens Funeral Home, Inc., Allentown.
