Pates, Hawks win team tennis titles
The Freedom Patriots were crowned District XI Class 3A Team Tennis champions, and Bethlehem Catholic was crowned District XI Class 2A Team Tennis champions on Oct. 12 at Lehigh University.
The District XI tournament began last Monday when the Patriots defeated Emmaus, 4-1. The Patriots then defeated Southern Lehigh, 4-1, the next day.
Taking on Parkland in the final, Freedom won, 3-1, leaving the two singles match between Natalie Sinai and Joanna Wu unfinished since the Patriots had already won.
At one singles, Freedom’s Tashanna Smith defeated Murong Yao, 6-1, 6-1. Sinai won the first set of her match, 6-3, and was tied with Wu in the second set, 5-5, when the team final ended. At three singles, Parkland’s Jessica Tseo defeated Jessika Klo, 6-0, 6-3.
At two doubles, Freedom’s Anjali Chhugani and Olivia Chhugani defeated Sophia Lee and Maya Paul, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, and at three doubles, Megan Smith and Twinkle Gupta defeated Aditi Pallod and Sasha Singh, 6-0, 6-3.
Liberty also qualified for team districts but lost to the Trojans in the quarterfinal, 4-0.
Becahi defeated Notre Dame East Stroudsburg, 5-0, last Monday, and Allentown Central Catholic, 3-2, last Tuesday. Taking on Moravian Academy in the final, the Hawks won 5-0.
At one singles, Brenna Magliochetti defeated Isabella Bartolocci, 6-1, 6-0, at two singles, Belen Blasco defeated Miranda Gibson, 6-2, 6-0, and at three singles, Jessica Marks defeated Deirdre Hoffman, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
Taylor Adams and Caitlin Maloney won at two doubles against Kyla Manja and Liliana Nino, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Kaitlyn Hartman and Cecile Szollas won at three doubles against Grace Nixdorf and Jamilie Atiyeh, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Both Freedom and Becahi will move on to the PIAA State Team Tennis Tournament scheduled to begin on Oct. 23.
