Hawks Magliochetti wins 2A tennis title
Bethlehem Catholic senior Brenna Magliochetti repeated as District XI Class 2A singles tennis champion last week and hopes to repeat as PIAA State Class 2A singles champ in early November.
Magliochetti defeated Notre Dame Green Pond’s Logan Lencheski, 6-1, 6-1 in the district final last Thursday at Lehigh University. Magliochetti and Lencheski played in last year’s district final also.
“Last year I felt like we both played better,” Magliochetti said. “We had our A games that day. Last week, I just managed to get my serves in a few more times than her, get the ball back a few more times than her, so it was a similar strategy as when I played her last year.”
In the semifinal, Magliochetti faced teammate Belen Blasco and won, 6-2, 6-1.
“Belen plays pretty similar to Logan. She has a really big forehand so I was trying to exploit her backhand,” said Magliochetti. “I had to work really hard in that match too. You want to win, but you feel bad beating your teammate.”
In the quarterfinal, Magliochetti defeated Allentown Central Catholic’s Kiki Wang, 6-0, 6-3.
“Kiki actually plays number two, so I hadn’t played her yet, but she’s super athletic. She gets to everything, and gets every ball back, so I had to really work and be consistent. She really pushed me, especially in the second set,” Magliochetti said.
Magliochetti defeated Notre Dame Green Pond’s Keiran Lencheski, 6-0, 6-0, and in the first round, Blue Mountain’s Lauren Gumaer, 6-0, 6-0.
“It was exciting, relieving,” said Magliochetti about her district title.
This week, the Hawks are competing in the team district tournament, and then Magliochetti will get ready to defend her state title.
“I train with my personal coaches, I work out with my team, just playing a lot of tennis,” Magliochetti said. “Just always playing.”
In Class 3A, Freedom’s Tashanna Smith made it to the final but lost to Easton’s Elessa Jacobs, 1-6, 4-6.
Smith won the semifinal against teammate Natalie Sinai, 6-3, 6-2, and the quarterfinal against Parkland’s Joanna Wu, 6-0, 6-1.
Smith defeated Pocono Mountain East’s Sarah Naughton in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, and Liberty’s Paige Simons in the second round, 6-0, 6-0.
