Chris Panny’s round was going well last week with two holes left at the Eastern Pennsylvania Golf Championships. Then on his 17th hole the round got even better.

Panny was six over on his first nine and was looking to shoot even par on the back in hopes of staying in the top five to qualify for districts. He was right around that number when he hit his second shot on the par 5, 17th hole to 80 yards. For his approach shot, he pulled a 58-degree wedge, choked down a bit and sent it straight at the hole.

“I hit it well. It checked up a little bit and dropped [in the hole],” said Panny. “The hole-out eagle on 17 was huge. That dropped two shots when I was eight over. I made a stupid bogey on 18, but overall I was pretty pleased with how I finished out the round.”

The Trojan senior shot 79 to finish in fourth place at the tournament, held last Wednesday at Woodstone Golf Club.

Central Catholic’s Ian Arnold won the tournament with a 77. Panny tied three other players at 79 and was awarded third place.

“I was playing pretty well,” he said. “There were a couple holes I regret certain decisions that could have put me in first, but overall I’m happy with the result. Going to districts without having to qualify is a major plus.”

Panny was four over par through his first five holes, but came back with birdies at four and six.

“I thought I was back on track back at two over,” he said. “But two straight doubles left me at six over for the round. I knew if I wanted to make it I’d have to shoot even on the back or something close to it.”

His finish left him exempt from Monday’s district qualifying tournament, where four of his teammates punched their tickets to districts.

Parkland finished in third place as a team at 333 the EPC Championship. Emmaus and Northampton tied at 327 with the Konkrete Kids taking this year’s team title by tiebreaker (fifth-player’s score).

Parkland’s JC Grimm also earned a league medal, finishing in 12th place at 83. Trevor Grimm shot 85 at leagues, while teammate John Angelella carded an 86, Jimmy Kelly had 101.

In the EPC girls tournament, Parkland’s Paige Diaz shot 91 for fourth place. Ava Sweeney shot 107 for Parkland.
