Haws remain unbeaten

Going into their tennis match against Freedom last week, Bethlehem Catholic was still undefeated, having most recently defeated Liberty, 7-0, last Tuesday.

Led by number one singles player Brenna Magliochetti, the Hawks were 12-0 on the season, but their match against the Patriots was left hanging as darkness fell last Thursday.

Becahi’s singles players fared well against the Hurricanes, as Magliochetti won her match, 6-0, 6-0, Belen Blasco won at two singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Jess Marks won at three singles, 6-0, 6-0.

“I feel like the mom of the team. I feel really old, but it’s kind of fun,” said Magliochetti, a senior. “They’re in my position as a freshman, and how I looked up to the older girls on the team, so now I get to be in that position.”

Blasco is an exchange student from Spain who played her first match on Sept. 4.

“I didn’t play at my school; I play in a club. We have matches every weekend,” Blasco said. “I was a little bit nervous [at Becahi], but then it was good. I’m liking the girls. The people are really nice, so I feel really comfortable.”

Marks is a transfer from Parkland who played doubles for the Trojans last year.

“It was different because I had a partner and there was someone there supporting me, and in the beginning it was a little rough [at singles], but then I started progressing and getting better, and now I’m fine and having fun where I’m at right now, so it’s good,” Marks said. “I’m looking forward to Freedom because it’s going to be a good match.”

At two doubles, Taylor Adams and Caitlin Maloney won their match, 6-3, 6-2, at three doubles, Kaitlyn Hartman and Cecile Szollas won, 6-4, 6-1, and at four doubles, Alexa Schoenfield and Patty Superka won, 6-4, 6-4.

Later in the match, Magliochetti and Blasco teamed up at one doubles to win that match, 8-2.

The Hawks’ closest matches this season so far were 4-3 victories over Nazareth and Stroudsburg.

“Hallie DeNardo from Nazareth was a good match,” said Magliochetti. “The score didn’t seem as competitive, but she and I have grown up playing against each other, and that was a fun match to play. Taylor Adams and I played a tough doubles match against them too.”
