Hornet girls soccer is playing as a team
At the season’s halfway point, things are rolling along pretty well for the Emmaus girls soccer team.
The Hornets have hit a couple quick speed bumps but are at 6-2-1 overall this season and 5-2-1 on the season in the East Penn Conference, and getting better with every game.
This past week was a somewhat quiet week for the team with just one game, a 9-0 win over Dieruff.
In the win over the Huskies (1-7), Lauren Latchford scored twice, while Gianna Albanese, Maddie Fey, Kayla Griffith, Carly McGrath, Shania Merhtens, Sarah Smith and Lily Schmitt all tallied one goal.
“We’re really starting to put together a better team effort in our games,” said Hornet head coach Sarah Oswald. “At times, it’s looked like we weren’t all on the same page, but we’re playing much better as a unit now and the communication is high, which I like to see.”
Emmaus is closing in on a spot in districts, but the EPC is a little different. There is a crowded field of teams looking to qualify for a postseason spot.
The Hornets are in good shape. Next week they start a stretch of games against Parkland (6-2 EPC, 7-2 Overall), Nazareth (5-2, 7-3) and Whitehall (8-0, 9-0) that could determine a lot about where in the EPC playoffs, the Hornets will be seeded.
While Emmaus beat Parkland earlier in the season to snap the Trojans 70-game unbeaten streak in the EPC, they lost to both Nazareth (4-0) and Whitehall (2-0) on their first trip through the Skyline Division.
“We know there are some tough games coming up,” said Oswald. “We have to not just focus on those games but go out looking to play hard in every game on the schedule.
“We can’t let up because teams are all fighting for playoff spots and they know how much of a boost it would give them confidence-wise to beat us.”
One of the things that Oswald is happiest with is how her team has adjusted to a new system that she and the coaching staff put in place this season. The system was designed to play off player’s strengths rather than asking them to fit into a specific scheme.
“We knew there would be some time needed for everybody to adjust, but the good thing was that the girls were buying into it right away and didn’t resist making the changes,” said Oswald. “Now, they’re all adjusted to it after playing in it for a while and they’re making good decisions.”
Between now and next Wednesday when the stretch of games against the best teams in the EPC begins, the Hornets play at Pleasant Valley (5-4, 6-4) and East Stroudsburg South (2-6, 2-7) before hosting Central Catholic (4-4, 6-4) for the first of two games against the Vikettes.
