Wilkes University Student Gabriel Velez of Allentown studied abroad this past summer in Spain.

Velez received the Dr. Joseph Donald Stephens, DDS Global Scholars Award, which provides students with scholarships to pursue their education in another country.

The award was established by Wilkes University alumni Panos Kalaritis ’77 and Deborah (Stephens) Kalaritis ’78 in honor of her father, Joseph D. Stephens DDS, a 1951 graduate of Wilkes University.

Velez, a nursing major, took courses at Colegio Mayor Mara in Madrid and Malaga to earn nine credit hours.

She was immersed in the culture, visited museums, monuments and learned with students local to the region.
