Liberty set to face Becahi
Liberty is off to a 2-0 start to the year, but the Hurricanes finally get their first test of the season this weekend.
After impaling Pleasant Valley 42-0 in the season opener and then handling Pocono Mountain East in last week’s 42-7 demolition, the Hurricanes now have to deal with an angry Bethlehem Catholic squad Saturday night at BASD Stadium.
With the Hawks coming off a 37-20 loss to Freedom last week, the stakes for Saturday’s city rivalry contest enhances for both teams.
Liberty will get to see what they’re really made of this weekend, while Becahi wants to avoid back-to-back losses to city rivals and end any hope for the city championship.
For Liberty head coach John Truby, Saturday’s affair is not only a big game, but an opportunity for the Hurricanes to surprise people.
“We’re healthy again and that helps,” Truby said. “We know Beca has athletes all over the field and we expect to see a different team this weekend than how they played against Freedom. It’s going to be a huge opportunity for our defense to battle with them and for our passing game. I’m excited to see what we’re capable of doing against them.”
Todd Erney threw three touchdowns in the win over the Cardinals, but also was picked in the first half.
Truby feels that it’s vital for his team to have a balanced attack against Becahi to win and Erney will be a major factor in that.
Up front, however, is where the real battles will be going on, as the Hurricanes newly molded line will take on an aggressive Becahi front.
“Our offensive line is developing,” said Truby, “but this will be their biggest test of the season. We need those guys to do a good job up front to give our offense a chance to be successful.”
Liberty certainly took notes of how Freedom was able to exploit the Hawks defense last week, as Pates QB Jared Jenkins threw for 253 yards and two scores in a statement victory for the Pates.
Now, it’s a chance for Liberty to make their own statement this week.
“I’m ecstatic about how our defense has been flying around the field so far,” said Truby. “I think it’s going to be fun watching our D-line going up against Beca. Our seniors have played great so far and everyone is going to be excited for this weekend.”
