The summer league basketball playoffs took place last week, but none of the Bethlehem schools had qualified for one of the top six seeds in the Big School Division to make a run at the title.
Liberty, however, was the closest, coming up short with a 6-6 mark for the seventh seed.
That doesn’t seem to bother Hurricanes head coach Chad Landis, who was happy with the development of the team over the past two months.
“Our summer has been going very well,” said Landis. “We have seen a lot from a bunch of different players. We have a lot of younger guys that have played very well during the summer.”
Getting experience is one of the primary goals of summer league for many teams that have players trying to crack the varsity lineup.
But Landis also wanted to see how returning players would take on leadership roles.
“Some of our experienced players had to step into leadership roles,” he said. “Now we hope they can keep that rolling into winter with the rest of the team.”
Bethlehem Catholic (5-7) finished the summer in the top 10 of the league but now face the new task of finding a head coach after former boss Ray Barbosa moved on to take a position at Executive Education Academy Charter School in Allentown last week.
Freedom finished the summer at 1-10, but proved to everyone that when they can get their core group of players on the court, like they did at SportsFest and the Bash at the Beach tournaments, they can compete with anyone.
