LHS tennis tops WHS

Liberty’s tennis team opened its season with a 6-1 victory over Whitehall on Monday.

Paige Simons won in three sets at one singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, and Julia Zheng won at three singles, 6-4, 6-4 for the Hurricanes.

At two singles, Angie Ronca lost to Noel Yacoub, 2-6, 2-6.

Margeaux Donchez and Braden Drake won at two doubles, 6-4, 6-3. At three doubles, Regan Gunn and Sophie Carpenter won 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, and at four doubles, Gabriella Palermo and Shivani Patel won their match, 6-0, 6-4.

Donchez and Drake are playing together for the second consecutive year, and have moved up from three doubles.

“Most of the games [today] were deuce. It was pretty close the whole time,” said Donchez.

Drake is a senior, and Donchez is a sophomore, so although they may not be super close off the court, the pair get along on the court like they’ve known each other forever.

Keeping the ball away from the net was one of the challenges for the two doubles team against the Zephyrs.

“Now that we all know each other well and are getting better and better, we’re cruising,” Drake said.
