Horner’s Cemetery Historical Society will hold its 10-year anniversary festival 1-4 p.m. Sept. 22 at 4965 Nor-Bath Blvd. Activities will take place on the parsonage grounds and in the church yard and cemetery meadow.
Craig’s Scotch-Irish, founded in 1728, is the oldest permanent settlement in the Lehigh Valley. Horner’s Cemetery is the final resting place of the earlier founders and is the oldest cemetery in Northampton County.
The first congregation formed in 1730, and the first church was built in 1731.
Festival attendees can hear about the group’s ties to George Washington, Ben Franklin and Teddy Roosevelt, as well as historical stories of Jane Horner, the first woman killed by Indians, the deputy surveyor general of Pennsylvania, the surveyor of the Penn families, the first cleric who died in the American Revolution, the first officers of the county system, delegates to Carpenter’s Hall in Philadelphia, state militia surgeon general, postmasters and paymasters.
Other highlights of the day include food, raffles, tours, a hearse car show, live music, a DAR display, kids’ activities and a car tour of settlement homes.
Proceeds from the festival will be used to purchase stainless-steel name tags for tombstones that cannot be read.
