Allen Township board discusses plans for salt shed

At the July 24 meeting, Allen Township Board of Supervisors approved a bid package for a proposed salt shed. The project has been lurking as a proposal for months. Some of the dirt for the pad is removed, but there is additional dirt that needs to be excavated.

The additional dirt will be part of the bid package, but anyone can come in and take it. The pad is marked off.

“They need to use their backhoe and equipment to haul it. We just want to get rid of it,” Vice Chairman Dale Hassler said. “Anything taken reduces the bid price.”

According to township Engineer Robert Cox, the bid will consist of a base price for the building, plus alternates for paving, a carwash and upgraded electric service.

“The carwash was something we added, and we can see the cost,” Cox said. “We don’t have to take it.”

Board member Gary Behler likes the carwash idea.

“If it can add a couple of years to our vehicle life, it would be worth it,” he said.

The all-weather carwash might need upgraded electrical service.

The township will send out an agreement to residents in and around Buckingham Drive. Several residents approached the township asking to remove trees in the township right-of-way. An equal number wants to keep them. The township wants to remove the trees because they cause maintenance problems with sidewalks, curbing and underground piping.

The crux of the agreement is this: The township plans to take down your trees. If you want to keep your tree, sign the agreement. By signing the agreement, you accept responsibility for repairing sidewalks, curbing and underground pipes damaged by your tree.

In other action, Cox is meeting with Rockefeller Group to get new signs on Willowbrook Road. The new signs remove old weight restrictions from the township border with Hanover Township to the FedEx Ground development. New signs get installed to stop trucks from going on Savage and Bulls- head roads.

According to Cox, FedEx is getting close to making all the necessary corrections for its occupancy permit. Penn- DOT is comfortable that road improvements will be completed so the warehouse can open.

The board will issue its stand on a request by the owner of 88 Becker Ave. to increase impervious coverage on the undersized lot. The consensus is that increasing impervious coverage will impact future well and septic options. The measure will go before the township’s zoning hearing board. Any decision by that board is independent of the board of supervisors and based on information presented at the hearing.

Township Manager Ilene Eckhart reported that bridge improvements at the Kopper Penny intersection are on schedule.

The planning commission meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 20 will be held at the fire company, 3530 Howertown Road. The final plan for the Jaindl-Watson warehouses is expected to be presented at that time.
