Donald E. Cohen
Donald E. Cohen, 73, of Emmaus, died at home July 10, 2018, after a short but intense battle with cancer. He was the husband of Anne Marie (Zoshak) Cohen. They were married for 20 years. Born in Washington, D.C., he was adopted as an infant from the Children’s Protective Society by Drs. Abraham and Mabel (Blake) Cohen. He spent his formative years in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., and was a graduate of the Dublin School in Vermont.
In the years preceding the Vietnam conflict, he served as an Army Medic at Walter Reed Hospital. He was honorably discharged Feb. 8, 1971.
He graduated from George Washington University with a degree in finance. He worked for the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Department of Justice, before deciding to turn his hobby of collecting stamps and paper ephemera into a career.
While getting his education and working for H. E. Harris, an auction house in Boston, he started his first successful business. His work eventually took him to Emmaus, where he worked for a mail order stamp business. Before retiring, he worked as an appraiser for The Stamp Center, Wilmington, Del. After retiring, he built a successful eBay business.
He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and logged more than 1,200 hours of service.
His vegetable garden produced bountiful harvests. He loved jazz music and quiet time at the beach, especially Hatteras Island. He loved all animals, especially his English setter, Annie, who predeceased him.
With the help of his stepdaughter, he was able to connect with his biological relatives in the last years of his life.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Catherine Blake Cohen, of Boston, Mass.; cousin, Gloria and her husband Dennis Null, of Meridian, Miss.; stepdaughter, Suzanne Smith, of Philadelphia; stepson, Steven Smith and his wife Cindy, and their sons Hunter and Carter, of Barto; adoptive sister, Margery and husband Shelly Beinfeld, of Cambridge, Mass.; niece, Molly and her husband Perry Salmanovich, of Boston; nephew, Benjamin and his wife Alison, of St. Louis, Mo. He was predeceased by his father, mother and stepmother, Alice Muth Cohen.
