Four Liberty swimmers receive honors

Liberty High School swimmers, Chris Chambers, Robert Negron, Jase Smith, and Jake Evert achieved a total of four AA honors among them from the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association/Speedo for the 2017-2018 All America Swimmers and Divers Top 100 performances.

“This year we placed super well in the relays, and then there was my 50 free,” said Negron.

Chambers, Negron, Smith, and Evert had the 14th best time nationally in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:23.46.

“It’s pretty insane,” said Smith. “Fourteenth, that’s pretty good. That’s the lowest we’ve ever been.”

Placing first were Jack Wright, Joel Songer, Rick Mihm, and Mason Gonzalez from North Allegheny High School in Wexford, Pa. Their time was 1:19.60.

“They got number one in the country, and they were at our states meet,” said Chambers. “That was really cool to see those kids.”

Negron had the 39th best time nationally in the 50 freestyle with a time of[space]20.40.

Drew Kisler from Carmel High School in Indiana placed first with a time of[space]19.38.

In the 200 medley relay, Chambers, Negron, Smith, and Evert were 76th nationally with a time of 1:33.84, and in the 400 free relay, the Hurricanes were also 76th with a time of 3:07.12.

“I think we knew it was coming because we made the time. We were just waiting to see how well we placed,” Smith said.

The first place 200 medley relay team was Wyatt Davis, Stefano Batista, Andrew Couchon, and Kisler from Carmel High in Indiana with a time of 1:28.00, and the first place 400 medley relay team was Gonzalez, Wright, Mihm, and Andrew Zhang from North Allegheny.
