FHS aims for an encore

Freedom hopes it can muster together another impressive summer performance when the A-Town Throw Down takes place this weekend.

After the Patriots finished fourth in the Cedar Beach Basketball Showcase two weeks ago, Joe Stellato and the program are looking for an encore performance this weekend.

“SportsFest is always an exciting time for high school basketball fans,” Stellato said. “We played great in Bash at the Beach and are looking forward to this upcoming weekend. We ended up in the semifinals losing to Emmaus by single digits. We are excited to give it another run and play different teams.”

The Pates are in a pool with Hempfield, Palisades and Muhlenberg this week. Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic are also competing in the tournament, as the Hurricanes are paired up with Chambersburg, Notre Dame and Lincoln Leadership. Becahi has Hershey, Salisbury and Brunswick (NJ) to battle.

After having a slow start to the Cedar Beach summer league this year, Freedom found a way to turn up its play at the Bash at the Beach with a full-court press style.

Stellato knows teams will be more prepared for that this weekend, but still feels they have enough to make another run deep into Sunday’s final day.

“I feel we do so well in the summer tournaments due to our coaching staff taking them very serious and demanding that all the players show up for the tournaments,” he said. “A lot of teams do not have a full team and we also catch them off guard by playing a full-court game and pressure defense really giving teams a fit. We also have a lot of players that play AAU and have been playing in tournament format all summer.”
