When Bethlehem Township resident Alan Yuknis awoke Memorial Day, he found that somebody had broken off the toy M-16 rifle and removed the plastic military helmet from a roadside display that he had installed at the corner of his property, which honors those men and women who serve in the military and law enforcement.
Originally, the display was set up only on Memorial and Independence Day but in 2017 Alan and his wife. Carol. decided to let it stand year round. Up until this past Memorial Day all he had received were compliments. Then the aforementioned items were stolen along with the blank dog tags draped over the rifle.
Yuknis has restored the display, and he says he’ll continue to do that despite the recent thievery. In addition, he has installed a security camera, since cameras at the nearby Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical High School were unable to show who or at exactly what time they had stolen the pieces from his memorial.
His daily reminder to all passersby is back in order and the former Air Force SP (security police) sergeant says he will continue to show those who have and still serve the respect and honor they deserve.
PRESS PHOTO BY DANA GRUBBU.S. Air Force veteran Alan Yuknis puts the finishing touches on his display after having had to replace parts of it that were removed by somebody over Memorial Day weekend. He says that he has installed a security camera and is looking into other security measures to deter any future dishonoring of his family's salute to military veterans and those who serve in law
