Pates reach final four at Cedar Beach tournament
Freedom made a run to the final four of the Cedar Beach basketball showcase over the weekend and saw it end there.
The Pates lost to Emmaus in Sunday’s final four 52-41 and fell to eventual champion Berks Catholic 47-35 earlier on Sunday to give them a 4-2 finish to the tournament.
But after struggling through the Cedar Beach summer league with a 1-6 mark, the Pates made their usual run at a summer tournament, much to the pleasure of head coach Joe Stellato.
“It was a great weekend and the guys really played together,” Stellato said. “That made a difference this weekend. We continued to make the extra pass and really played well together.”
Bethlehem Catholic also went 4-2 before bowing out in the consolation bracket with their 61-39 loss to Freedom.
Liberty also fell victim to Freedom in the tournament with a loss to the Patriots in their third game of the tournament.
The Hurricanes finished 2-2, as they lost their subsequent contest to Northampton in the bottom bracket, but head coach Chad Landis thought the program completed the objectives they had coming in.
“We were able to play a bunch of games between our varsity and JV teams and a bunch of kids got to play a lot of minutes,” Landis said. “We also started to figure out what things will help us be successful on the court and some things that we want to avoid in the future.”
Liberty’s junior varsity squad made it to the championship game against Parkland, but lost 46-34.
The varsity all-tournament team featured two local players, as Justin Paz (Becahi) was named to the first team and Malek Mims (Freedom) was named to the second team.
The complete all-tourney team is below:
First team: Joe Girard III (Glens Falls); Justin Paz (Becahi); Robert Bobeck (Spring-Ford); Mark Swedberg (Emmaus) and Luis Garcia (Berks Catholic).
Second team: Malek Mims (Freedom); Chad Kratzer (CCHS); Zac Gula (Northampton) and Bryce Diehl (Emmaus).
MVP: Casey Jack (Berks Catholic).
